JaQuan Johnson, Pistol Theft, TX 2024

Ja’Quan Johnson, a 26-year-old baggage handler at Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), is facing up to twenty years in federal prison after admitting to stealing a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol from checked luggage. United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr., FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs, and Austin Police Chief Brian Manley announced the charges.

This afternoon, Johnson appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Mark Lane and pleaded guilty to one count of theft from an interstate shipment and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. The admission came after a probe by the FBI, TSA, and the Austin Police Department’s Aviation Division, which uncovered Johnson’s pilfering spree between November 29, 2016, and February 2, 2017.

Johnson is currently on bond while awaiting sentencing, which has yet to be scheduled. Assistant United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer is handling the prosecution for the Government.

The .40 caliber Glock pistol was among seven handguns Johnson stole from passenger bags at ABIA. The theft of such a firearm poses significant risks to public safety and highlights the vulnerabilities in airport security protocols.

Johnson’s crime has sparked widespread concern about the integrity of baggage handling processes across major airports, with calls for enhanced oversight and stricter employee screening procedures. As this case unfolds, it underscores the importance of vigilant security measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The grim reaper has come calling for Johnson, and justice is on the horizon. The community demands answers and a stern example is set for any would-be thieves pondering their own treachery at our nation’s airports.
