Feds Crack Down on Marijuana and Gun Trafficking in Iowa
Council Bluffs Man Sentenced to 5 Years and 1 Day in Prison
Her Tou Yang, a 42-year-old Detroit, Michigan native, has been sentenced to 60 months and 1 day in prison for his involvement in a marijuana and firearm trafficking scheme in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
According to court documents, Yang was arrested on August 15, 2021, after he sold approximately five pounds of marijuana and a stolen firearm to an undercover agent. This was not his first offense, as he was also caught selling an AR-style rifle on September 9, 2021.
The investigation into Yang’s activities was led by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal announced the sentencing, stating that the case was a prime example of the federal government’s commitment to reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
Yang’s sentence includes two years of supervised release, which will commence after his release from prison. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and community organizations to prevent violence from occurring in the first place.
The sentencing of Her Tou Yang serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in illicit activities, particularly those involving firearms and narcotics. As our communities continue to grapple with the effects of crime, it is essential that we hold individuals accountable for their actions and work towards creating safer neighborhoods for everyone.
The federal government’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched in May 2021, aims to foster trust and legitimacy in our communities, support community-based organizations, set focused enforcement priorities, and measure results. The sentencing of Her Tou Yang is a testament to the effectiveness of this strategy and the importance of collaborative efforts in reducing crime and making our communities safer.
