Aaron Leib Kobisher, Fentanyl Trafficking, California 2023

Aaron Leib Kobisher, the alleged leader of a San Diego-based drug trafficking organization, was extradited from Spain to face charges related to a potent fentanyl seizure.

In a press release, the US government alleges that Kobisher coordinated the smuggling of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine from Mexico to San Diego for distribution in the US. He is accused of being the most substantial flight risk, prompting the US to move for detention.

Kobisher fled to Mexico in November 2022, after several seizures linked to him and his organization. He was arrested in Spain on June 21, 2023, after boarding a flight to Mexico City. On November 20, 2023, Kobisher was extradited to the United States. He made his first appearance in federal court on November 21, 2023, and is scheduled for a detention hearing on November 24, 2023.

The indictment against Kobisher, 34, includes charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine under Title 21, U.S.C., Sections 841(a)(1) and 846, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $10 million fine. Kobisher is also facing criminal forfeiture under Title 21, U.S.C., Section 853.

The investigation was led by the DEA with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations and the US Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Mokhtari. The US government’s Office of International Affairs assisted in securing the arrest and extradition of Kobisher.

Kobisher’s arrest and extradition are significant milestones in the ongoing effort to combat the spread of fentanyl in the US. Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid that has contributed to a significant increase in overdose deaths across the country. The US government has made combating fentanyl a top priority, and the success of this investigation is a testament to the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies.
