WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Aaron Walter Gray, 37, of Ashland, Pennsylvania, will spend the next 7 years and 9 months behind bars after being sentenced Wednesday to 93 months’ imprisonment for peddling fentanyl and illegally possessing a firearm. Chief U.S. District Judge Matthew W. Brann handed down the sentence, bringing a close to a case that began with Gray’s initial flight from justice.
Gray first came to the attention of authorities in June of 2020, when he skipped a Schuylkill County court appearance on prior drug and gun charges, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant. For over a year, Gray evaded capture, leading to a coordinated effort by multiple federal and state agencies. It wasn’t until April of 2021 that members of the Pennsylvania State Police Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshals located him hiding out at an Airbnb rental in Snyder County.
The raid on the Airbnb revealed a substantial operation. Authorities discovered Gray in possession of fentanyl, along with drug paraphernalia, a loaded Glock 21 .45 caliber pistol, multiple magazines and rounds of ammunition, smaller amounts of other controlled substances, and a staggering $7,000 in cash. The sheer volume of evidence pointed to Gray’s significant involvement in the illicit drug trade, and the firearm confirmed the dangerous nature of his activities.
“This sentence sends a clear message that those who traffic dangerous drugs and use firearms in furtherance of those crimes will be held accountable,” stated U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney James M. Buchanan, and involved a collaborative investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Marshals Service, Pennsylvania State Police, Schuylkill and Snyder County District Attorneys, the Schuylkill County Drug Task Force, and Frackville Borough Police.
Federal officials emphasized that Gray’s case is part of the broader “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN) initiative, a nationwide program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence through focused enforcement and community partnerships. Additionally, the prosecution was undertaken as part of the “Heroin Initiative,” a district-wide effort to dismantle heroin trafficking networks operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
The sentencing of Aaron Walter Gray highlights the ongoing struggle against the opioid epidemic and the commitment of law enforcement to disrupt the flow of deadly drugs into communities. While 93 months represents a significant penalty, it remains to be seen if it will deter others from following in Gray’s footsteps and risking the lives of those addicted to fentanyl.
