Erie Convenience Store Owner Admits to Food Stamp Scam
A 54-year-old Erie resident, Abdul Alquraishi, has pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and food stamp fraud.
According to court documents, Alquraishi and three co-defendants regularly exchanged food stamps for cash at The Lotto World, a convenience store located at 832 State Street in Erie. Customers were also allowed to pay off store credit with food stamps, and Alquraishi used customers’ food stamp cards to buy items at various stores in the area.
Alquraishi, who owned and operated The Lotto World, admitted to engaging in this illicit activity over an extended period.
The court was advised of the guilty plea, which was entered before Chief United States District Judge David S. Cercone. Sentencing is scheduled for November 22, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. The law provides for a total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both.
Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation was conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, and the Erie Police Department.
Pending sentencing, Alquraishi was continued on bond.
