Abel Cruz-Bautista Sentenced for Re-entering U.S.
ALBANY, NEW YORK – A shocking case of illegal re-entry into the United States has come to an end with the sentencing of Abel Cruz-Bautista, a 25-year-old Mexican citizen.
According to sources, Cruz-Bautista was sentenced to time served (48 days in jail) for illegally re-entering the United States. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Thomas E. Feeley, Director of the Buffalo Field Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).
Cruz-Bautista admitted to being a citizen of Mexico and that he had illegally returned to the United States after he was removed to Mexico on September 3, 2010. He was arrested by ICE officers on July 25, 2017, in Richfield Springs, New York.
Following the sentencing, Cruz-Bautista was remanded to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security, for removal proceedings. This case was investigated by ICE-ERO and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of immigration and the consequences of re-entering the United States illegally.
