A deadly highway chase resulted in the deaths of three individuals, and a Laredo resident will now spend decades in federal prison for his role in their tragic demise.
On November 13, 2021, Abraham J. Ahumada, 24, of Laredo, Texas, was behind the wheel of a black Nissan Murano traveling at speeds over 100mph on U.S. Highway 83. When law enforcement attempted to pull him over, Ahumada refused to yield, accelerating above the speed limit and disregarding a red light in the process.
The high-speed chase ended in a fatal collision with a passenger vehicle that had the right of way at an intersection. In the aftermath, two individuals in Ahumada’s vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, as well as a woman who was traveling in the struck vehicle with children. The three children suffered bodily injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Abraham J. Ahumada has been sentenced to 262 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $4,077 in restitution. At the time of his plea, Ahumada admitted to causing the car accident and leaving multiple victims behind.
U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani stated, ‘Three people are dead because of this human smuggler’s reckless behavior.’ The court heard evidence that Ahumada showed no remorse and laughed about his crime, but Judge Micaela Alvarez ruled that his ADHD and learning disability were no excuse for his actions.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francisco J. Rodriguez prosecuted the case.
Abraham J. Ahumada will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
