Acting US Attorney Takes Helm in Virgin Islands
In a move that sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement community, Joycelyn Hewlett was named Acting United States Attorney for the District of the Virgin Islands, replacing the outgoing Ronald W. Sharpe. Hewlett, a veteran prosecutor with over two decades of experience, has been serving as First Assistant US Attorney since 2006.
Pursuant to the Vacancies Reform Act, Hewlett’s appointment was made official following the resignation of former US Attorney Sharpe. In her new role, Hewlett will serve as the chief Federal law enforcement officer for the District of the Virgin Islands.
Hewlett’s impressive resume boasts an array of notable positions, including her tenure as Chief of the Civil Division and her current role on the Executive Office for US Attorney’s Evaluation and Review Staff. Her extensive experience has also seen her serve on the Civil Chief’s Working Group, a subcommittee of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee, for a term of four years.
Before joining the US Attorney’s Office in 1998, Hewlett worked as legal counsel with the Virgin Islands Legislature, Assistant Attorney General with the Virgin Islands Department of Justice, Law Clerk to Territorial Court Presiding Judge Verne A. Hodge, and as an associate at Bryan Cave, an international law firm in Washington, D.C. She also served as president of the Virgin Islands Bar in 2006.
A 1986 graduate of the College of the Virgin Islands and a 1992 graduate of Howard University Law School, Hewlett’s education and experience make her an ideal candidate for the position. Prior to law school, Hewlett worked at the Virgin Islands Daily News as a news reporter and editor, giving her a unique perspective on the intersection of law and journalism.
Hewlett’s appointment has been met with widespread approval from local and national law enforcement officials, who praise her commitment to upholding justice and her extensive knowledge of the law. As Acting US Attorney, Hewlett will be responsible for overseeing the US Attorney’s Office in the Virgin Islands and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld in the territory.
