Aberdeen, South Dakota – A shocking case of child abuse has come to light in Little Eagle, South Dakota, where a woman has been sentenced for her role in the heinous crime. Adele Fay Fast Horse, a 26-year-old resident of Little Eagle, was sentenced to two years of probation and a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on May 20, 2024.
Fast Horse was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2023 after her niece reported the incident to authorities. The 14-year-old niece had shown her photographs of Fast Horse’s husband kissing a 12-year-old girl in Little Eagle, which is within the Standing Rock Reservation. In a disturbing turn of events, Fast Horse offered her niece $20 to assault the 12-year-old girl, who sustained minor injuries. The assault took place on April 1, 2023.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court.
Fast Horse pleaded guilty to the charges on October 30, 2023. The charges against her include child abuse, which is a serious offense in the eyes of the law. The sentencing marks the end of a long and difficult journey for the victim, who has been left to deal with the trauma of the assault.
