PIERRE, SD – In a federal court ruling, former Eagle Butte resident Philip Lamar Nordvold was convicted of possessing a firearm as a prohibited person, sparking an 18-month prison sentence.
Nordvold, 45, was convicted of the crime on January 22, 2024, after being found guilty of violating the law in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota.
This is not the first time Nordvold has faced charges for the same crime. In 2015, he was previously convicted of the same offense. Approximately three months prior to May 16, 2022, near Eagle Butte, Nordvold unlawfully possessed a Heritage Manufacturing Incorporated brand revolver with an obliterated serial number.
The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen took on the prosecution, leading to the guilty verdict.
Nordvold was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Nordvold’s sentencing marks another step in the federal government’s efforts to reduce violent crime and gun violence nationwide. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together law enforcement agencies and communities to address these pressing issues.
The PSN program is based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring results. Through this strategy, the federal government aims to create safer neighborhoods for everyone.
