BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS – In a shocking turn of events, Adrian Martinez, a 56-year-old Boston man, pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in federal court yesterday. The defendant’s crimes date back to April 1998, when he was serving in the United States Navy and was convicted of sodomy, assault, and intent to rape a minor under the age of 12.
Martinez, a level 3 sex offender, was previously convicted of committing sodomy with a person under the age of 12, taking indecent liberties upon the body of a female under 12 years of age (four counts), and assault with intent to rape a person under the age of 12, in violation of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice.
After serving approximately 11 years of his 40-year sentence, Martinez was released from custody in February 2009. As a registered sex offender, he was required to notify law enforcement of any changes to his address or employment. However, at some point after September 30, 2022, Martinez moved out of his Boston residence without notifying the authorities, prompting an investigation by the Boston Police Department.
The defendant’s failure to register as a sex offender has serious consequences. Under federal law, Martinez faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a minimum of five years and up to lifetime supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Kevin Neal, Acting United States Marshal for the District of Massachusetts, made the announcement yesterday. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke A. Goldworm, Project Safe Childhood Coordinator and a member of the Major Crimes Unit, is prosecuting the case.
The case is brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
Martinez is scheduled to be sentenced on October 28, 2025, before U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin. As the case against him unfolds, one thing is clear: the defendant’s failure to register as a sex offender has put the community at risk, and justice must be served.
