ADT Hacker Gets 52 Months for Voyeurism
A former ADT employee has been sentenced to 52 months in federal prison for hacking into customers’ video feeds and spying on attractive women in their homes.
Telesforo Aviles, a 35-year-old former ADT security technician, pleaded guilty to computer fraud in January and was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Brantley Starr.
According to plea papers, Aviles repeatedly accessed customers’ ‘ADT Pulse’ accounts, giving himself real-time access to the video feeds from their homes without their consent. He added his personal email address to the accounts, claiming he needed to ‘test’ the system or did so temporarily.
However, Aviles used the access to view footage of attractive women and couples engaging in sexual activity inside their homes, he admitted. He secretly accessed roughly 200 customer accounts over 9,600 times during a four-and-a-half year period.
A female victim told the court in an impact statement that Aviles’ actions had a ‘lasting emotional and mental toll’ on her, saying, ‘This deliberate and calculated invasion of privacy is arguably more harmful than if I had installed no security system and my house had been burglarized.’
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Dallas Field Office conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sid Mody prosecuted the case.
Aviles’ sentence is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of cybercrime and the importance of protecting our personal data.
