New York – Letitia James, the New York Attorney General, has slammed President Trump’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act as bigoted and dangerous. In a bold statement, James emphasized that the act’s use to arbitrarily detain and deport immigrants was not only unjust but also undermining the nation’s values.
“Invoking this extraordinary wartime power to target immigrants is a grave misuse of authority,” James stated. “Our country was built by immigrants who work tirelessly to contribute to our communities. Their fundamental rights and dignity must be respected.”
The Attorney General’s office has been steadfast in its defense of immigrant rights, leading the charge against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Just this month, James led a coalition of attorneys general in defending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans. In February, she won a significant victory by upholding birthright citizenship after joining a lawsuit to challenge President Trump’s unconstitutional executive order.
In January, James called for expanded TPS for Haitians and other vulnerable communities facing overseas violence and disasters. The Attorney General vowed her office would use all available resources to combat the administration’s immigration policies, ensuring that the rights of immigrants in New York and across the country are protected.
“The Trump administration’s attacks on immigrants have caused fear, chaos, and heartache,” James concluded. “My office will continue to fight back against these unjust policies.”
