Seattle – The grim story of Duane Brick, a former commercial airline mechanic, took a darker turn as he was sentenced to six months in prison and five years of supervised release for his shocking act of sexual assault aboard an aircraft. U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman announced the sentence on a day that saw Justice James H. Chun deliver a stern rebuke: “This was a serious and frightening crime. He was clearly a predator, checking to see if she was responsive and continuing the abuse despite her lack of consent.”
Records show Brick’s despicable act took place aboard a flight from Phoenix to Seattle on March 20, 2023. The 53-year-old was seated in a middle seat, opposite a 24-year-old woman who was anxious about flying and had taken anti-anxiety medication. After initially tolerating Brick’s attempt at conversation, the young woman retreated into her headphones, seeking solace in sleep. She was startled awake by Brick’s unwanted advances.
The court heard that Brick not only grabbed her hand but also moved it toward his groin. He tapped her face and breasts to test if she was asleep, then groped her breast and tried to pull down her trousers. Despite the victim’s efforts to resist, he persisted in his assault for several minutes. Assistant U.S. Attorney Grace Zoller described the crime as “intentional, methodical, and prolonged,” adding that Brick blamed the victim when caught.
