Chance Anthony Uptmore, Firearm Violations, Texas 2021

San Antonio, Texas – A local man has been convicted of firearm violations in a case that highlights the dangers of drug addiction and gun ownership. Chance Anthony Uptmore, 25, was found guilty of one count of being an unlawful user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(3).

The conviction stems from a search warrant executed at Uptmore’s residence on January 18, 2021 as part of an investigation into his involvement in the January 6th Capitol Riots in Washington D.C. During the search, law enforcement officers found a loaded Taurus .38 Special Revolver along with over 13 pounds of marijuana, 1.8 pounds of THC edible products, 1.2 pounds of THC waxes and oils, and one-third of a pound of Psilocin mushrooms.

According to testimony from law enforcement officers and Uptmore’s own video-recorded statements, the defendant described himself as a ‘weedaholic’ who smoked marijuana multiple times per day. Uptmore admitted to officers that at the time of his arrest, there had not been a day where he had not gotten high all day in at least six months, maybe even a year.

The court concluded that Uptmore was both an unlawful user of and addicted to controlled substances at the time he possessed the loaded revolver. Uptmore is scheduled for sentencing on July 26, 2022 and faces up to 10 years in prison.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s San Antonio Joint Terrorist Task Force, with the assistance of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO) and the San Antonio Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew W. Kinskey and Mark T. Roomberg are prosecuting the case.

This case highlights the dangers of gun ownership and drug addiction. It is a reminder that those who engage in illicit activities can face serious consequences, including lengthy prison sentences.

As a community, we must work together to prevent such crimes from happening. We must also support those who are struggling with addiction and provide them with the resources they need to overcome their struggles.
