Upper Darby Man Charged with Illegal Re-entry after Deportation
PHILADELPHIA – A 12-year-old case of a man entering the country illegally has come back to haunt him. Romeo Lucas-Lopez, a/k/a “Romeo Lopez,” of Upper Darby, PA, was charged by indictment with illegal reentry after deportation.
The indictment alleges that on or about May 17, 2018, Lucas-Lopez, an alien, and native and citizen of Mexico, was found in the United States after having been deported from the United States on or about November 7, 2010 and November 15, 2010. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of two years.
According to law enforcement, Lucas-Lopez’s re-entry into the country occurred despite being deported twice in the past. His case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations (“ERO”), and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laurie Magid.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of immigration and deportation in the United States. As the country grapples with its immigration policies, cases like Lucas-Lopez’s serve as a reminder of the consequences of re-entering the country after being deported.
An indictment, information or criminal complaint is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid is leading the prosecution of Lucas-Lopez. His next court appearance is pending.
