A brazen bank robber, who struck seven times in five counties, has been indicted on multiple charges of bank robbery and attempted robbery.
John William Boland, 38, of Mammoth Lakes, was hit with five counts of bank robbery and two counts of attempted robbery, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
The alleged robberies took place over a five-week period, with Boland demanding cash from the “second” drawer at each bank. In at least one instance, he warned the teller that the cash should not contain any dye packs or electronic tracking devices, and on another occasion, he claimed to have a weapon.
The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the Rancho Cordova Police Department, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Boland allegedly robbed the following banks:
- El Dorado Savings Bank in Sutter Creek on March 29, 2021
- Wells Fargo Bank in South Lake Tahoe on April 1, 2021
- Wells Fargo Bank in Truckee on April 13, 2021
- Union Bank of California in Redding on April 16, 2021
- Wells Fargo Bank in Placerville on May 1, 2021
- Umpqua Bank in El Dorado Hills on May 3, 2021 (attempted)
- Wells Fargo Bank in Rancho Cordova on May 4, 2021 (attempted)
If convicted, Boland faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count of conviction.
The charges are only allegations, and Boland is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
