PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The grim streets of Coraopolis have been the scene of a major law enforcement crackdown as Mauro Zerecero-Soto, 24, faces a federal charge for illegal re-entry into the United States after being deported.
According to the grim details released by U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton, Zerecero-Soto was named in a one-count indictment by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh. The evidence suggests that the defendant, who is from Mexico, was removed from the United States by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on April 5, 2011.
The defendant’s return to the U.S., this time found in Coraopolis on Jan. 4, 2013, has landed him in hot water. The law mandates a maximum sentence of two years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both for such a serious offense. The actual sentence will depend on the severity of the crime and any prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull is now handling this case for the government. The investigation that led to Zerecero-Soto’s indictment was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, adding another layer to the federal government’s efforts against illegal immigration.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and as such, Zerecero-Soto is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The grim streets of Coraopolis serve as yet another reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal immigration and the consequences faced by those who break the law.
