Luis Alberto Alvarez-Arguello, Illegal Re-entry, Pennsylvania 2013

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The grim streets of Pittsburgh saw a federal indictment today against Luis Alberto Alvarez-Arguello, alias Rosalio Martinez-Alvarez and Mario Martinez-Contreras, for the serious charge of illegal re-entry into the United States after being deported.

The 28-year-old native of Mexico was formally removed from the U.S. by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Jan. 14, 2011, and again on June 13, 2011. Yet, Alvarez-Arguello’s return to the city of Pittsburgh on July 19, 2013, caught the Port Authority Police off guard.

This brazen act of illegal re-entry carries a heavy penalty under federal law, with a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine of $250,000 hanging over the defendant. Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull is now at the helm of the government’s prosecution against Alvarez-Arguello.

The investigation that led to this charge was a joint effort between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Port Authority Police. An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Alvarez-Arguello has been detained since his illegal return to the U.S., and now faces the prospect of facing justice for his daring breach of immigration law.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless efforts by federal authorities to enforce immigration laws and protect the borders of the United States.
