Today, Zachary Sizemore, a 24-year-old active-duty member of the United States Air Force, stood before Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, guilty of stealing and selling military-issued night vision technology. The crime has rocked the defense community, as it reveals the brazen theft of valuable equipment intended for battlefield use.
Sizemore’s downfall began on November 29, 2016, when he was arrested at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. His arrest followed a meticulous investigation by the Department of Defense, Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), New York.
According to court filings, Sizemore sold night vision goggles and mini-thermal monoculars, among other military gear, racking up sales of at least $86,000 from 80 items. DCIS has estimated the total losses due to his thefts exceed $130,000. The stolen night vision devices contain specialized components that cannot be used for their intended purpose without rendering them useless, a policy Sizemore flagrantly disregarded.
Acting United States Attorney Bridget M. Rohde, Special Agent-in-Charge Leigh-Alistair Barzey of the DCIS, and Special Agent-in-Charge Angel M. Melendez of ICE HSI, all confirmed Sizemore’s guilty plea today. Sizemore faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison when he is sentenced on June 29, 2017.
The case against Sizemore is being prosecuted by the Office’s General Crimes Section, with Assistant United States Attorney Nomi D. Berenson leading the prosecution and Assistant United States Attorney Tanisha R. Payne overseeing the forfeiture.
