Ajarhi Roberts, also known as Wayne Roberts, a 25-year-old from Stephens City, Virginia, has admitted to committing bank fraud in Berkeley County, West Virginia, announced United States Attorney Bill Powell in a federal court filing.
Roberts pled guilty to one count of “Bank Fraud,” admitting he used another person’s identifying information to illegally access and manipulate financial accounts. The scheme unfolded in two phases—March and June of 2016—marking a calculated effort to exploit personal data for monetary gain.
The crimes were carried out across multiple banking institutions in Martinsburg, where Roberts allegedly opened accounts and initiated fraudulent transactions using stolen credentials. Authorities say the breach was discovered after victims reported unauthorized withdrawals and account activity.
Now facing the full weight of federal prosecution, Roberts could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison and fined as much as $1,000,000. The actual sentence will depend on the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, including the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal record.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation, tracing digital footprints and financial trails to link Roberts directly to the fraudulent acts.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the plea hearing. No sentencing date has been set, but court officials indicate it will occur within the next several months as the prosecution prepares its sentencing memorandum.
