Kickback Scheme Lands Lexington Doctor in Prison
A Lexington doctor, Dr. Amr Mohamed, 55, has been sentenced to 2 years in prison for his role in a kickback conspiracy that bilked Medicare out of millions.
According to court documents, Mohamed, a licensed nephrologist, entered into an agreement with RediDoc, a telemedicine company, to provide unnecessary medical services and equipment to Medicare beneficiaries. In exchange, he received a $20 average kickback per beneficiary, totaling $261,054 between March 2018 and April 2019.
The scheme, which involved over 7,000 Medicare beneficiaries, caused Medicare to pay out $14,150,764.60 for medically unnecessary items. Mohamed was also ordered to pay $14,150,764.60 in restitution, which he will likely struggle to pay after serving 85% of his 2-year prison sentence.
Under the terms of his sentence, Mohamed will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for three years after his release. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Smith prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.
The sentencing of Mohamed is a significant blow to the healthcare industry, where kickback schemes and Medicare fraud are all too common. It serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will face serious consequences.
Carlton S. Shier, IV, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Michael E. Stansbury, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, Louisville Field Office, jointly announced the sentencing, vowing to continue to crack down on such schemes.
As the Grimy Times continues to investigate and expose healthcare fraud and kickback schemes, we urge anyone with information to come forward and report suspicious activity.
