ALBANY, NY – John L. Brooks, 41, of Akron, Ohio, is headed to federal prison after receiving a 21-month sentence for deliberately obstructing a federal investigation by tampering with evidence. The conviction followed a four-day jury trial in January 2019, with prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alicia Giglio Suarez, laying out a damning case. Evidence showed Brooks traveled from Ohio to Albany on April 29th, 2017, specifically to retrieve a cache of eight firearms. These weren’t just any guns; Brooks had originally purchased them on March 18th and 19th, 2017, and then supplied them to individuals residing in New York.
The timing of Brooks’ retrieval mission raised immediate red flags. It occurred just days after one of the New York recipients had been interviewed by a federal agent. Further compounding the suspicion, phone records revealed a flurry of calls to Brooks from numbers bearing the 518 area code – Albany’s local calling area – in the days leading up to his trip.
