A Guinean national has pleaded guilty to serious federal charges, marking a significant victory for law enforcement in the fight against identity theft and passport fraud. Abdoulaye Barry, 25, of Jamaica, NY, pleaded guilty to possessing a fraudulent passport card and aggravated identity theft before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.

The charges carry a mandatory minimum penalty of two years in prison, a maximum of 10 years, and a $250,000 fine. This sentence reflects the severity of the crimes committed by Barry, who was found to be in possession of a fraudulent United States Passport card, bearing the name and passport card number of a real person with the defendant’s photograph.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie O. Lamarque, who is handling the case, Barry was found with the fraudulent passport card on February 26, 2017, at the Rainbow Bridge. In addition to the passport card, Barry was also in possession of a fraudulent Ohio driver’s license bearing the name of a real person with the defendant’s photograph, and a Florida driver’s license bearing the name and photograph of another person.

The investigation that led to Barry’s guilty plea was conducted by the United States Department of State, under the direction of William Ferrari; Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Rose Brophy, Director of Field Operations; and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge James C. Spero. The collaborative effort between these agencies demonstrates the commitment to combating identity theft and passport fraud.

Barry’s case highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement in preventing and prosecuting these types of crimes. The use of fraudulent identification documents can have serious consequences, including identity theft, financial fraud, and national security threats. By pleading guilty, Barry has taken responsibility for his actions and will face the consequences of his crimes.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 3, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. before Judge Arcara. The outcome of the sentencing will determine the exact punishment that Barry will face, but one thing is certain – he will be held accountable for his crimes. As the justice system continues to crack down on identity theft and passport fraud, individuals like Barry will be brought to justice and face the full weight of the law.

The guilty plea of Abdoulaye Barry serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are dedicated to protecting the public from these types of crimes.
