ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The grim saga of Hoeub Chan’s criminal exploits took a darker turn as the 35-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for smuggling dangerous contraband into jail. Chan, a resident of Rochester, NY, was found guilty of sneaking Oxycodone and Dextroamphetamine past guards’ watchful eyes by cunningly concealing them in the seams of his shirt, socks, and shoes.
The United States Marshals Service, under Marshal Charles Salina’s direction, conducted a meticulous investigation that led to Chan’s downfall. The defendant’s duplicity didn’t stop there; he also made numerous false statements, falsely denying possession of any contraband to Deputy United States Marshals during his processing.
Chan’s criminal resume doesn’t end with this latest conviction. He was previously convicted of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, where he participated in a scheme that re-routed closed account payments from Rochester Electric and Gas, swindling over $72,000. The court ordered him to repay every cent of the ill-gotten gains.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig R. Gestring handled Chan’s case with unwavering determination, seeing it through to its conclusion. James P. Kennedy, Jr., Acting U.S. Attorney, announced the sentencing, which came in January 2016 after Chan was initially convicted for conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Today’s sentence is a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to avoid justice and the relentless pursuit of law enforcement agencies like the United States Marshals Service.
