Wolcott Man Sentenced For Tax Evasion And Mail Fraud

A 49-year-old man from Wolcott, Vermont, and Littleton, New Hampshire, has been sentenced to prison time for his role in a multi-year scheme to avoid paying taxes and child support obligations. Timothy Forrest Edgar was sentenced to 13 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.

The sentencing came after Edgar pleaded guilty to charges of Tax Evasion and Mail Fraud. The remaining seven counts of the Superseding Indictment were dismissed after sentencing.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Edgar’s offenses caused significant harm to individuals who were simply doing their jobs. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss noted this in her decision to impose sentence on Edgar.

The case was developed through the coordinated efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia Cowles represented the government in the case.

Edgar was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth. The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised the dedicated efforts of the agencies involved in developing the case.

Edgar’s scheme to avoid paying taxes and child support obligations involved harassing federal, state, and local officials who were tasked with enforcing those obligations.

With a sentence of 13 months in prison and three years of supervised release, Edgar’s scheme has finally come to an end. The community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that justice has been served.
