New York City’s Johnathan Goodwin, 22, was handed a 21-month federal prison sentence yesterday for his role in a heroin trafficking ring that stretched from New York City to Vermont.
Goodwin, who hails from Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin and had been in federal custody since June 2016 when DEA agents apprehended him along with Annette Dupree, a co-defendant, upon their arrival in Burlington, VT.
The DEA seized approximately six ounces of heroin and one ounce of cocaine base during the bust. Goodwin faced a maximum sentence of 20 years but was sentenced to less than half that term due to the advisory sentencing guidelines recommending between 41 and 51 months.
Judge William K. Sessions III, who presided over the case, took into account Goodwin’s difficult childhood and minor criminal record in granting a lesser sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Doherty, Jr., handled the prosecution while Assistant Federal Public Defender David McColgin represented Goodwin.
Acting United States Attorney Eugenia Cowles praised DEA and the Burlington Police Department for their efforts, highlighting that this case is part of the Vermont Heroin Initiative, a collaborative effort to combat drug distribution in the state.
