ALBANY, NEW YORK – The grim shadow of illegal immigration looms once again as Joseph Coffey, 35, and Darren Cook, 32, from Hogansburg, New York, were yesterday indicted for conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and three counts of alien smuggling. A ring that spanned the St. Lawrence River into the United States was at the heart of their alleged crimes.
This chilling plot reportedly involved Coffey and Cook consorting with a Canadian-based alien smuggling syndicate on August 8, 2025, to funnel three aliens—two from China and one from the United Kingdom—into American territory. The duo’s alleged motive: profit at any cost. As of now, these charges are merely allegations, and the defendants enjoy the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Coffee and Cook will face arraignment in federal court before United States Magistrate Judge Gary L. Favro, following a previous detention order that has them currently in custody. The U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector and Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III led the charges, underscoring the serious nature of their alleged crimes.
Acting United States Attorney Sarcone III vowed to crack down on such despicable acts: “Coffey and Cook have seemingly placed greed over human life, furthering the dark interests of alien smuggling organizations. Their exploitation of the Akwesasne Reservation as a conduit for illegal immigration and other contraband is unacceptable. My office will not rest until these criminals are brought to justice.”
Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia echoed Sarcone’s sentiments: “The U.S. Border Patrol stands resolute in safeguarding our borders and protecting the American people. Human smuggling is a perilous enterprise that we will continue to combat with unwavering dedication. Smugglers like Coffey and Cook will be apprehended and held accountable, as we dismantle these criminal networks.”
The defendants face severe penalties, including a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 15 years in prison for each alien smuggling charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Stitt is prosecuting the case, with the United States Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) leading the investigation.
