Montgomery, Alabama – The Middle District of Alabama and the DEA announce a crucial prescription drug take-back initiative this Saturday, October 26th. From 10am to 2pm, Alabamians can safely dispose of old medication at various state locations.
This event, organized by U.S. Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., and DEA Special Agent in Charge Clay Morris, seeks to combat the soaring rates of prescription drug abuse. Over 6 million Americans abuse these drugs, with a majority sourced from family homes. Proper disposal is vital to prevent misuse and environmental contamination.
Collection sites are listed on DEA’s website or can be obtained by contacting local law enforcement. expired medications pose significant risks, both health-wise and environmentally. Proper disposal keeps these drugs out of the hands of teenagers and protects water supplies.
U.S. Attorney Beck emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This drug Take-Back day allows us to rid our medicine cabinets of these potentially lethal drugs.” DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Morris echoed these sentiments, highlighting the success of past events that have removed over 1.5 million pounds of medication from circulation.
