Greenbelt, Maryland – In a severe blow to the Dead Man Inc. (DMI) gang’s influence, Anthony E. Alascio, 31, of Baltimore, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus to 15 years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for his brutal assault on a federal witness.
Alascio, once an inmate at the Chesapeake Detention Facility (CDF), is also serving a 135-month sentence for robbery. The judge ordered that today’s sentence be served consecutively to the robbery case, ensuring Alascio will spend decades behind bars.
The assault occurred on November 26, 2013, when Alascio used a battery-filled sock as a weapon against another inmate, who was also a witness in a federal trial. The beating left the victim with serious injuries and a hospital stay.
Alascio’s crime spree began when he informed several individuals of his intent to enter secure detention. His retaliation against the witness was not just physical; he referred to the victim as a ‘RAT’ and admitted in a letter that he beat the man for ‘telling on my peoples so he got what he deserved.’
The victim had previously testified against Jose Joaquin Morales, who was sentenced to life for arranging the murder of Robert Long. The prosecution also led to the exoneration of Demetrius Smith, who had been wrongfully imprisoned for the same crime.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein emphasized the commitment to protecting witnesses and vowed zero tolerance for retaliation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Zachary A. Myers and Sandra Wilkinson were commended for their role in the case.
