Felon Sold High-Caliber Firearms by Albany Gun Dealer, Feds Say

A 67-year-old Albany gun store owner is facing serious charges after allegedly selling high-caliber firearms to a convicted felon, the Grimy Times has learned.

Nicholas Earle Russell, the owner of Albany Guns, Coins and Jewelry, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Eugene on four counts of selling high-caliber firearms to an individual he knew was a convicted felon.

The alleged offenses took place between November 19, 2016, and January 25, 2017, and included the sale of a .50 caliber handgun and .223 and .308 caliber rifles.

Russell could face up to 40 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million if convicted. Each charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of ten years and a fine of up to $250,000.

An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant should be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and is being prosecuted by Nathan J. Lichvarcik, Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The indictment is a serious blow to Russell and his business, and raises questions about the lax regulations surrounding gun sales in Oregon. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
