ALBANY, NEW YORK – In a significant crackdown on the Capital Region’s drug underworld, Felix Arencibia, 38, of Amsterdam, has been joined by four others in an indictment for a massive methamphetamine and fentanyl distribution conspiracy.
The grim news was announced by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, Frank A. Tarentino III of the DEA New York Division, and Ketty Larco-Ward of the USPIS Boston Division. Arencibia is accused of leading a ring that received shipments of the deadly drugs from Christian Mur-Santana, 28, of Las Vegas, and then distributed them throughout the region.
Arencibia faces life imprisonment for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as distribution of methamphetamine. His co-defendants, Todd Austin, 64, Ahmad Burke, 66, Kevisha DuBoise, 27, and Mur-Santana also face serious charges, with maximum sentences ranging up to 20 years.
Despite the gravity of the charges, all defendants except for Todd Austin have been released on bail pending further proceedings. Austin remains detained following a detention hearing.
The DEA and USPIS are leading the investigation into this conspiracy, which is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation aimed at dismantling high-level drug trafficking organizations. Other defendants who have pleaded guilty in the case are scheduled for sentencing later this year.
