Arthur Steven Stewart, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, New Mexico 2024

ALBUQUERQUE — A gritty federal crime charge has landed Arthur Steven Stewart, 23, of Albuquerque, in hot water. The defendant appeared before a federal judge today, where he was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Stewart’s legal troubles began on January 24, 2024, when he allegedly possessed a firearm and ammunition, fully aware that his previous conviction for robbery rendered him ineligible to own firearms or ammunition. If convicted, Stewart faces up to 15 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

The investigation into this case was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance from the Albuquerque Police Department. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter Haynes is prosecuting the case under an agreement with the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which has been instrumental in prioritizing federal charges against those who perpetuate violence in the Albuquerque metro area.

This initiative, launched since 2020, has reviewed nearly 3,000 cases and charged over 300 criminals, including Stewart. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is set to expand this program throughout New Mexico, in partnership with the state’s Department of Justice and the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez and ATF Special Agent in Charge Brendan Iber announced the charges today. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
