Albuquerque Narcotics Kingpin Jose Magana Garcia Faces Federal Charges

ALBUQUERQUE – The DEA has dropped the hammer on Jose Magana Garcia, a Mexican national and alleged kingpin of a massive drug trafficking operation in Albuquerque. Federal charges have been filed against Garcia for his role in a scheme that officials describe as one of the largest fentanyl rings to hit the city.

According to court documents, Garcia was identified during an undercover DEA operation on August 13, 2025, as the source of supply for thousands of fentanyl pills. During the sting, agents watched as Garcia, a known presence in the drug trade, delivered approximately 2,000 fentanyl pills to an undercover officer through intermediaries.

The investigation took a turn when surveillance revealed Garcia conducting transactions at an apartment complex in northeast Albuquerque. Agents tracked him down on August 27, 2025, executing a search warrant that uncovered a fortune in drugs hidden in plain sight—a cache of over 8 kilograms of fentanyl pills, 4 kilograms of heroin, and nearly 35 grams of methamphetamine.

Garcia was arrested at the scene and charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and heroin. The charges carry a minimum sentence of 10 years and could see Garcia spending his entire life behind bars if convicted.

U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and DEA Special Agent in Charge Omar Arellano announced the charges, emphasizing the significance of this bust for Albuquerque’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking. The DEA Office, along with local law enforcement agencies, has been working tirelessly to dismantle Garcia’s operation and bring him to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Elena Stiteler is handling the prosecution of Garcia, who remains in custody pending trial. As per standard procedure, Garcia is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
