Alejandro Alvarez, Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, California 2020

Alejandro Alvarez, a 46-year-old San Francisco man, has been convicted of possession with intent to distribute 65 pounds of methamphetamine, a federal jury decided in a four-day trial.

The evidence presented during the trial revealed that Alvarez was dealing tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of methamphetamine and heroin monthly, at the time of his arrest. San Francisco Police officers executed a search warrant at his residence and recovered the massive amount of methamphetamine, valued at more than $1.5 million when sold in retail quantities.

The recovered stash contained over five million individual doses of the highly addictive drug, further underscoring the severity of Alvarez’s crime.

According to the investigation, the case began when officers with the San Francisco Police learned that an individual who went by the name ‘Chewy’ was selling heroin and other drugs. The officers eventually developed enough evidence to execute a search warrant on Alvarez’s apartment, where they found over $46,000 in cash, ledgers detailing drug deals and pricing, several pounds of suspected heroin, and the 65 pounds of methamphetamine.

The federal grand jury indicted Alvarez on February 20, 2020, charging him with one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams and more of methamphetamine, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1) and (b)(1)(A)(viii). Following the guilty verdict, Alvarez’s sentencing was scheduled for July 14, 2022.

Alejandro Alvarez now faces a maximum statutory penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of $10,000,000. Any sentence will be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

The investigation into Alvarez’s activities was a collaborative effort between the San Francisco Police Department, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph Tartakovsky and Alexis James prosecuting the case with the assistance of Lance Libatique.
