Former RMV Employee Convicted of False Identification Documents
BOSTON – In a shocking case of public corruption, a former employee of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has been convicted of producing false identification documents. Alexander Brewer, 24, of Boston, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Mark L. Wolf to conspiracy to produce false information documents.
Brewer faces up to five years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for September 18, 2013. The court’s decision marks a significant blow to the RMV’s efforts to maintain public trust.
According to court documents, Brewer issued Massachusetts driver’s licenses to individuals who presented legitimate Puerto Rican identity documents, in an identity other than their own, to obtain driver’s licenses for the purpose of concealing their true identities. This brazen scheme ran from December 2011 through December 2012, leaving many to question the RMV’s ability to verify identities.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Bruce M. Foucart, Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations in Boston; and Colonel Timothy P. Alben, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, made the announcement today. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia M. Carris of Ortiz’s Public Corruption and Special Prosecutions Unit.
The conviction of Alexander Brewer serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of public corruption and the importance of vigilance in maintaining the integrity of government institutions. As the RMV works to rebuild public trust, this case serves as a necessary reminder of the consequences of such actions.
