Pittsburgh Botnet Operator Indicted for Massive Cybercrime Scheme
Alexander Lefterov, a 37-year-old Moldovan national, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh for his role in operating and controlling a massive botnet that compromised thousands of computers across the United States.
According to the indictment, Lefterov and his co-conspirators operated the botnet from March 2021 through November 2021, using stolen login credentials to gain access to victims’ accounts at financial institutions, payment processors, and retail establishments. The scheme allowed Lefterov to monetize his cybercrime by leasing the botnet to other co-conspirators, who would use the compromised computers to distribute malware and ransomware.
“Lefterov and his co-conspirators allegedly used their sophisticated cyber skills and capabilities to victimize people throughout the country without regard for the financial havoc they wreaked,” said U.S. Attorney Eric G. Olshan. “This case illustrates the resolve of our office and the law enforcement community to identify and pursue accountability from those who seek to exploit technology for their own personal gain at the expense of ordinary citizens.”
The indictment charges Lefterov with nine counts, including conspiracy to commit computer fraud, unauthorized access of a protected computer to obtain information for financial gain, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Each of these offenses carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, while the intentional damage to a protected computer offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Lefterov’s co-conspirators allegedly included “coders” who used their technical expertise to maintain and update the botnet over time. To further monetize the scheme, Lefterov allegedly provided access to the botnet for the purpose of distributing malware, including ransomware, to infected computers within the botnet.
Assistant United States Attorney Mark V. Gurzo is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The FBI and the U.S. Secret Service are also involved in the investigation, which highlights the importance of protecting Americans from cyber threats both domestically and abroad.
Lefterov’s indictment serves as a reminder of the resolve of law enforcement to hold cybercriminals accountable for their actions. The case demonstrates the sophistication and reach of cybercrime schemes, as well as the need for vigilance in protecting against online threats.
