Alfonzo Jamal Lewis, Cocaine Trafficking, Georgia 2015

Alfonzo Jamal Lewis, a 35-year-old man from Albany, Georgia, is locked up for 30 years after being caught moving five kilograms of high-purity cocaine across state lines in 2015. The conviction marks the end of a years-long investigation into a drug operation that funneled half a million dollars’ worth of poison into southwest Georgia communities.

Lewis, also known as Pookie, made repeated trips from the Atlanta metro area to Albany, picking up bulk cocaine from stash houses in Decatur and East Point. Federal and local authorities had him under surveillance for months, watching as he cycled through drug dens. On December 14, 2015, the clock ran out. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol pulled him over for speeding on his way back from East Point—and found five kilos stashed on the backseat of his car.

Charged with conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and actual possession with intent to distribute, Lewis stood trial for three days in early 2020. On February 5, 2020, a federal jury found him guilty on both counts. On August 4, 2020, he was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison, followed by ten years of supervised release.

“Illegal drugs destined to poison communities in southwest Georgia were stopped by our federal and state law enforcement partners,” said U.S. Attorney Byung J. “BJay” Pak. “Their outstanding work resulted in the seizure of a half-million dollars’ worth of cocaine and a lengthy term of imprisonment for a career drug dealer.”

Dan Salter, Executive Director of the Atlanta-Carolinas HIDTA, praised the multi-agency takedown: “This investigation is indicative of cooperative federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to rid our communities of this poison.” Fulton County Sheriff Theodore “Ted” Jackson echoed the sentiment, calling the bust a win for families and children, and vowing continued collaboration to keep drugs off the streets.

The case was investigated by the Atlanta-Carolinas HIDTA and the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, with critical support from the Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Monroe Police Department, Albany Police Department, and U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg and former Emory Law School Extern Joseph N. Lenoff prosecuted. For more information on drug dangers, visit www.justthinktwice.gov.
