Alfonzo Lee Womack, Possession of Converted Machine Gun and Ghost Guns, Nevada 2022

LAS VEGAS, NV – Alfonzo Lee Womack, 30, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced Wednesday to 57 months for a cache of illegal firearms, including a converted machine gun and several so-called “ghost guns.” U.S. District Judge Ann R. Traum also tacked on three years of supervised release following Womack’s incarceration.

The bust, which took place near Sloan, Nevada, on October 5, 2020, revealed Womack possessed six firearms despite being a convicted felon. Among them was a Glock 22 pistol illegally modified to function as a fully automatic machine gun, complete with a high-capacity, 31-round magazine. The discovery came a mere four months after Womack’s most recent felony conviction and while he was still on probation – a clear disregard for the law.

Womack’s criminal history is extensive. Court documents show prior convictions for trafficking cocaine and methamphetamine, domestic violence resulting in corporal injury, and evading a police officer. These convictions permanently prohibit him from legally owning or possessing firearms and ammunition. The feds weren’t buying his excuses, and the judge clearly wasn’t either.

The case was a joint operation between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge Joshua Jackson emphasized the agency’s commitment to cracking down on illegal firearms, particularly the growing threat of unserialized, privately made firearms – the “ghost guns” that are increasingly turning up at crime scenes.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Cowhig prosecuted the case, building a solid case against Womack. U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frierson for the District of Nevada stated that the sentence sends a clear message: those who illegally possess dangerous weapons will be held accountable. The proliferation of untraceable firearms poses a significant risk to public safety, and the government is prioritizing efforts to combat this issue.
