St. Louis, MO – In a shocking turn of events, Alfred Brown, the pastor of the Church of Jesus Christ in Chesterfield, Missouri, has pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
According to court documents, Brown admitted to filing a false 2009 tax return, which failed to disclose income he took from the Church and the AB Academy daycare center, where his wife serves as director. In all, Brown admitted to avoiding more than $80,000 in income taxes for 2008, 2009, and 2010.
As part of his plea agreement, Brown acknowledged that he failed to report considerable cash withdrawals and payments for luxury cars used by him and his wife as income from the Church and the daycare center. This admission is particularly damning, given that Brown’s wife is the director of the daycare center, and Brown himself is the pastor of the Church, where he is prohibited from participating in the management or operation due to a prior felony conviction in the State of Missouri.
Brown’s actions have raised serious questions about the financial dealings of the Church and the daycare center, and the potential for widespread tax evasion. The case highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in non-profit organizations.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Tom Albus is handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Brown’s sentencing has been set for August 11, 2015, and he faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison and/or a fine up to $100,000.
The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines will be taken into consideration when determining Brown’s actual sentence. This case serves as a reminder that tax evasion will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such behavior will be held accountable.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what other secrets will be uncovered about the financial dealings of the Church and the daycare center. One thing is certain, however: Alfred Brown will face the consequences of his actions in a court of law.
