ALGONA, IA – James Patrick Murphy, 38, of Algona, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after being caught passed out in his pickup truck with a cache of stolen and loaded weapons. Murphy was sentenced on July 30, 2020, to 64 months’ imprisonment following a February 26, 2020, guilty plea.
The sentencing, handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City, stems from Murphy’s unlawful possession of firearms. He pled guilty to two counts of being a felon, drug user, and domestic abuse misdemeanant in possession of a firearm, and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. Prosecutors laid bare a disturbing pattern of behavior, painting Murphy as a repeat offender with a history of violence and substance abuse – all legally prohibiting him from owning guns.
The bust unfolded when law enforcement responded to a report of a person slumped over the wheel of a pickup in Algona. Upon arrival, officers identified the individual as Murphy and discovered an AR-15-style rifle and a semiautomatic pistol chilling on the seat beside him. A search of the vehicle revealed a fully loaded 20-round magazine for the AR-15, a scope, a Taurus pistol with a fully loaded magazine and a round chambered, a baggie of methamphetamine, pills, guitar picks, a U.S. passport, and a cellphone. Crucially, investigators later determined both firearms were stolen.
Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild successfully prosecuted the case, highlighting the gravity of Murphy’s offenses. Murphy’s criminal history and current illegal activity made him a clear threat, and the sentencing reflects a commitment to keeping dangerous individuals off the streets. He will also serve a 3-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment – a meager consolation given the potential for harm.
This case isn’t an isolated incident. It was brought forth as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through focused enforcement and community partnerships. It’s also a component of Project Guardian, a broader effort to tackle gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. These programs represent a concerted push to address the root causes of crime and protect communities from dangerous individuals like Murphy.
Murphy is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a federal prison facility. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Algona Police Department.
