United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell dropped a hammer on Kyle, South Dakota’s Evan Brown Bull, sentencing the 38-year-old to 33 years and four months in federal prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen Schrier on June 7, 2024, following a conviction in March of this year. Brown Bull, a resident of Kyle, will also serve five years of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Brown Bull’s downfall began when he was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2023. The trial, which lasted three days in Rapid City, South Dakota, saw him convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and throughout Rapid City.
During the trial, evidence was presented that between 2016 and 2023, Brown Bull conspired with others to peddle meth across the reservation and city limits. Surveillance footage caught him in four sting operations, selling the deadly substance to an undercover informant. Chat records furthered the case against Brown Bull, detailing numerous transactions and painting a clear picture of his involvement.
The Badlands Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force took the lead on this investigation, bringing together agents from the FBI, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Drug Enforcement, Martin Police Department, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case with vigor.
Upon sentencing, Brown Bull was swiftly remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin his lengthy term behind bars.
