Allen Goossen, Heroin Trafficking, New Mexico 2016

ALBUQUERQUE – A chilling sentence was meted out today in federal court as Allen Goossen, 30, from Farmington, N.M., was sentenced to 90 months behind bars for his role in a heroin trafficking operation. The gravity of Goossen’s crime was underscored by the court’s findings that he caused the death of a 26-year-old man through heroin injection in November 2013, a tragedy that also prompted his enhanced sentence.

Despite the case involving only 12 grams of heroin, the judicial system determined that an extended term was necessary to safeguard public welfare and deter future criminal activity. Goossen’s actions were found to be a reasonably foreseeable cause of the victim’s death, and he continued to traffic in the dangerous drug despite this loss of life.

Goossen’s downward spiral into the criminal underworld began in February 2016 when he was arrested following a sale of approximately 6.03 grams of heroin to an undercover agent of the HIDTA Region II Narcotics Taskforce. His arrest also uncovered 5.95 grams of heroin packaged for distribution.

Indicted on March 8, 2016, Goossen pleaded guilty to distributing heroin and possessing it with intent to distribute on separate dates in 2014 and 2015. The investigation was spearheaded by the Albuquerque office of Homeland Security Investigations and HIDTA Region II Task Force, a joint effort between multiple local law enforcement agencies.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander M. Uballez prosecuted Goossen as part of the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative, which combats the opioid crisis that has ravaged New Mexico. The HOPE Initiative is a multifaceted program focusing on prevention, treatment, law enforcement, reentry, and strategic planning to address the complex issue of drug trafficking.

Goossen has entered a not guilty plea to related state charges stemming from the 2013 overdose. His case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences associated with heroin trafficking and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat this public health crisis.
