Allen Tereal Grimes, a 34-year-old resident of Keystone Heights, Florida, was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.
Chief United States District Judge Timothy J. Corrigan handed down the sentence to Grimes, who was also ordered to forfeit the ammunition found during the crime. Grimes initially appeared in federal court on March 4, 2024, and the judge ordered him detained. He later entered a guilty plea on April 10, 2024.
According to court records, on August 11, 2023, Grimes was found in possession of Winchester 9mm ammunition and other types of ammunition. At the time of the incident, Grimes had accumulated seven prior felony convictions, including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, fleeing and eluding a police officer, felony battery, and assault with intent to commit to a felony.
As a previously convicted felon, Grimes is prohibited from possessing ammunition under federal law. The crime was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Jacksonville Office. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Kevin C. Frein and Kirwinn Mike.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in local communities. The program brings together law enforcement and the communities they serve to create safer neighborhoods for everyone.
Project Safe Neighborhoods was launched on May 26, 2021, and is based on four core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations that prevent violence, setting focused enforcement priorities, and measuring the results of these efforts.
Grimes’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of possessing ammunition as a convicted felon. The community can rest assured that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to reduce violent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe.
