Alvaro Alvarado, Heroin Trafficking, Connecticut 2015

Hartford, Connecticut – A 27-year-old man was sentenced to three years in federal prison for heroin trafficking, following a joint investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hartford Police Department.

Alvaro Alvarado, of Hartford, was sentenced to 36 months of imprisonment, followed by two years of supervised release, for trafficking heroin. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford.

The investigation into Alvaro’s heroin trafficking began in 2014, after law enforcement made two controlled purchases of heroin from him at his apartment building on Webster Street in Hartford. On March 26, 2014, a court-authorized search of Alvaro’s apartment revealed approximately 700 grams of heroin, a small amount of cocaine, and approximately $3,200 in cash.

The 700 grams of heroin found in Alvaro’s apartment can produce approximately 28,000 individual dose bags when packaged for resale. The dramatic increase in heroin overdoses in Connecticut was a major factor in the joint investigation into heroin trafficking.

Alvaro has been detained since his arrest on March 26, 2014. On January 15, 2015, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Leaming. The investigation was a joint effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hartford Police Department.
