Amadis Hunter, a 25-year-old Syracuse resident, was sentenced to 89 months in prison for his role in a racketeering conspiracy tied to the Bricktown Gang, a violent street gang operating in Syracuse.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hunter admitted to being a member of the Bricktown Gang, which has been operating in the city since at least 2000. The gang’s activities included maintaining a geographic territory within Syracuse where only gang members could sell crack cocaine, cocaine, and marijuana, protecting that territory with violence, obtaining drugs from suppliers, and using hand signs, blue bandanas, and tattoos to signify gang membership.
The investigation, led by the Syracuse Gang Violence Task Force, revealed multiple acts of violence and drug distribution carried out by gang members, including two murders, eight shootings, seven acts of gun possession, 12 acts of crack distribution and/or possession with intent to distribute, and a major gang assault at a Denny’s restaurant.
One of the murder allegations involved the November 2010 killing of 20-month-old Rashad Walker, Jr., who was shot by Bricktown gang member Saquan Evans as he sat in a car seat with his mother by his side. The other murder allegation involved the September 2007 fatal shooting of Anthony Ford by gang members Jarrell Williams and Ernest Hester.
The prosecution resulted from a long-term investigation by the Syracuse Gang Violence Task Force, which includes agents and detectives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Syracuse Police Department, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department, the New York State Troopers, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
Hunter’s sentence was handed down by a U.S. District Court in Syracuse. Further questions or inquiries can be directed to Assistant U.S. Attorney John M. Katko at (315) 448-0672.
