Florida Man Sentenced for Role in Tax Return Scheme

Columbia, South Carolina – Amondo Samuel Burke, a 32-year-old man from Tampa, Florida, has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for his role in a tax return scheme that bilked the government out of $111,228.

According to court documents, Burke pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds and one count of possession of 15 or more unauthorized devices. Senior United States District Judge Margaret B. Seymour handed down the sentence, which includes three years of supervised release and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the amount of $111,228.

The scheme, which Burke admitted to running in February 2012, involved using the personal identifying information of unsuspecting individuals to file false tax returns and load the fraudulent refunds onto prepaid debit cards.

During a traffic stop in Kershaw County, South Carolina, deputies found two laptop computers, 52 prepaid debit cards, and 73 medical intake forms from a Philadelphia-based drug treatment facility in Burke’s vehicle.

The case was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigations and the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Ben Garner is prosecuting the case.

Burke’s sentence marks the culmination of a lengthy investigation into the tax return scheme, which netted him a total of $111,228 in fraudulently obtained tax refunds from the IRS.

With his sentence now finalized, Burke will begin serving his time in federal prison, bringing an end to a case that highlighted the dangers of identity theft and tax return schemes.
