In a major blow to Jacksonville’s streets, Andres Gallegos, a 38-year-old man, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine in the Eastern District of Texas.
According to the court documents, an investigation into drug trafficking in Smith and Cherokee Counties revealed that Gallegos regularly sold methamphetamine from his residence in Jacksonville. The investigation, which began in October 2018, led to Gallegos being indicted by a federal grand jury on September 8, 2019, and charged with distributing methamphetamine on October 16, 2018, October 17, 2018, and again on October 26, 2018.
On January 13, 2020, Gallegos pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. He was subsequently sentenced to 78 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker on the same day.
“Over time, cases like this can make a big difference in our local communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. “Through a sustained, focused effort by federal, state, and local law enforcement, we can make our cities and town safer and drug-free.”
The case was investigated by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the Jacksonville Police Department, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Allen H. Hurst handling the prosecution.
Gallegos’ sentence is a significant victory for law enforcement in the region, and serves as a warning to others involved in drug trafficking.
Gallegos’ crime and subsequent sentence are a stark reminder of the dangers of methamphetamine and the importance of continued efforts to combat the illicit drug trade.
