Leader of Violent Street Gang Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

Andy Sosa, the former leader of the Trinitarios gang, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a massive narcotics distribution conspiracy and firearms charges in Manhattan federal court.

According to court documents, Sosa led the Greenbridge chapter of the Trinitarios, which controlled the drug markets in the Kingsbridge Road and Webb Avenue area of the Bronx. He was responsible for funneling massive quantities of heroin, marijuana, prescription drugs, and cocaine onto the streets of the Bronx, using violence to intimidate anyone who stood in his way.

Between 2009 and 2014, Sosa’s drug distribution network extended beyond the Bronx, with hundreds of grams of heroin being given to others to sell in Connecticut. He also kept firearms at his apartment in the Bronx, which were used to protect the gang’s drug distribution territory and themselves from rival gang members.

Sosa was shot by members of a rival gang, known as Dominicans Don’t Play (or DDP), and carried a 9mm firearm for protection. His apartment was used to store guns and stash drugs for gang members. Sosa ran Trinitario meetings at his apartment on numerous occasions.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara praised the work of the New York City Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security in bringing Sosa to justice.

Sosa pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge James L. Cott and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin on [date].

The case is being handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justina Geraci, Rebecca Mermelstein, and Rachel Maimin in charge of the prosecution.
