A Pennsylvania man has been brought to justice for his role in the heroin epidemic plaguing Southern West Virginia. Angel Diaz-Gibson, 26, of Reading, pleaded guilty to federal drug charges in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.
Diaz-Gibson was accused of distributing heroin in Greenbrier County, with the most serious charge stemming from a transaction that took place on August 22, 2015. According to court documents, Diaz-Gibson sold 148 stamps of heroin to a confidential informant in Fairlea. Each stamp is considered to be one dose of heroin.
The defendant also admitted to using a phone to facilitate the drug deal, as well as distributing a total of approximately 740 heroin stamps in Greenbrier County.
Diaz-Gibson faces up to 24 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on June 6, 2018. The case is being prosecuted under the Greenbrier Valley Heroin and Pill Initiative, a joint effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin.
U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart commended the investigative efforts of the Greenbrier Valley Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, stating, ‘If you make the mistake of selling heroin in Southern West Virginia, I can assure you that we have an aggressive team that will use every tool to hold you accountable. Selling heroin in my district will put you behind bars for a long time.’
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down pill trafficking, eliminating open air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.
Diaz-Gibson’s guilty plea marks a significant victory in the ongoing effort to combat the opioid epidemic in West Virginia. The case serves as a reminder that those responsible for flooding our communities with deadly substances will be held accountable for their actions.
